Science fiction or what many shorten to SF or Sci-Fi with varying punctuation and capitalization, is a very popular category of fiction that frequently involves speculations founded on up-to-date or future technology or science .
Sci-Fi as we will refer to it in this document is often a subset of horror movies, but not always. Sci-Fi comes in all forms such as books, moveis and tv series. Nearly all the most popular TV networks have created sci-fi series. There is a TV channel called Sci-Fi that shows a large amount of Sci-Fi shows, but the critics are are angry that the channel is "selling out" and showing wrestling and other non-Sci-Fi shows.
The Sci-Fi channel has angered many of it viewers by canceling some of its most popular shows out of no where for example Farscape which was a Sci-Fi channel original TV series and had a huge fan base. Other Sci-Fi TV series such as Startrek, Babylon 5, Firefly and Stargate have a massive fan base, even years after a shows cancellation.
Sci-Fi has a long history, it started with the silent film era, typically as short films shot in black and white, sometimes with colour tinting. They usually had a technological theme and were often intended to be humorous. In 1902, Georges Méliès released Le Voyage dans la Lune, often considered the first sci fi movie and a film that used early trick photography effects to depict a spacecraft’s journey to the moon.
Today's Sci-Fi movies are more serious than humorous. There are thousands of Sci-Fi classic such as Planet of the Apes, Alien, The Terminator, Blade Runner, Flash Gordon, Dune and many more. The trend is not showing any signs of slowing, Sci-Fi based shows & movies are one of the most popular forms of entertainment
